Mindset to strengthen: Reconnect with Nature
Why it matters: Nature naturally encourages Wonder
In many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, Spring has begun. When we take the time to marvel at the new life of Spring, we begin to appreciate the unfolding of a Wonder far beyond ourselves. While we provide the necessary environment for growing, we ourselves are not in charge of the growing process.
Maria Montessori (1870-1952) observed the great value of close contact with Nature, particularly for the character development of adolescents, ages 12 to 18 years old. Her educational formation at this Plane of Development was farm-based, called the erdkinder. In this carefully prepared environment, the adolescents learn to apply academic learning to real life, in a very concrete, hands-on way. The few erdkinders in the United States commonly offer this beyond-academic formation through student-run microbusinesses.
Montessori-educated children - such as the founders of Amazon and Google - took their Wonder to new heights and changed the course of retail and our interaction with information.
Suggestions to try:
At home: Even if you don’t have a green thumb, add a houseplant to your life. Watch it carefully over the weeks as it grows and changes.
At school: Put down your phone during your break outside. Notice the life around you in the flowers, trees, grass.
At work: Take a walk outside at lunch. If your office building is located in a concrete jungle, look for a store that sells flowers, and enjoy them. Better yet, buy some for your desk!
Mimosa:
