Mindset to strengthen: Taking time to Wonder
Why it matters: Wonder brings us to Gratitude and Innovation.
You’ve likely heard the suggestion that it’s healthy to practice Gratitude: consciously bringing to mind those things for which we’re grateful. Wonder can lead to Gratitude. When I wonder about how my washing machine progresses through its cycles, I’m grateful for the person who invented it. I add soap into the water stream, add the garments, adjust a few settings, and hit a button. One hour later - boom! Clean clothes!
Wonder can also be the seed for innovation. Innovation starts with the question, “I wonder how this problem can be solved,” or “I wonder how this job can be done in a better way.” I think it’s accurate to say that no progress is made without Wonder.
Suggestions to try:
At home: Wonder if there’s a better way to do something you’re already doing, then act on that Wonder. I, for one, am already wondering how I can get higher yields in my garden this year. Gardening has been a big challenge for me, with our incredibly short growing season. Last year, my cucumbers were flowering beautifully and were destroyed by a frost. Ugh.
At school: Wonder how you can improve your quality of study time. Write down your top 3 suggestions, and commit to doing the 1 that makes the most sense to you for a full week. For instance, you could study at a desk in a quiet room, instead of in your busy kitchen. Or you could turn your phone off completely, and put it in another room to avoid this distraction tool. Think about your biggest stumbling blocks, and Wonder how you can avoid them.
At work: Wonder if there are tasks that you can delegate to an assistant or coworker. If you work mostly on your own, Wonder if some tasks you consider necessary are in fact so. If they are, Wonder how you can simplify or streamline your workflow. Try out an idea that you brainstorm.
