Mindset to strengthen: Friendliness to Error
Errors can be enemies if we let them, drawing us into a mental paralysis and fear of trying something new. Or errors can be friends, teaching us new lessons and building up our resilience.
What’s your relationship with Error?
Suggestions to try:
At home: Next time you make a simple mistake like spilling milk or breaking something, don’t berate yourself for clumsiness. Shrug it off, clean it up, and move on.
At school: When you get a grade lower than you wanted, think back how you can improve next time. Starting sooner to give yourself more time before a deadline? Getting off your phone earlier to get a good night’s sleep? Putting your laptop in another room so it’s not a study distraction? Pick one action you’ll do to make studying easier next time.
At work: Own an error you make. If you aren’t deliberately sabotaging your company, your error likely can be fixed in some way. Figure out what that is, make the repair, and resolve to do better next time.
