Mindset to strengthen: Concentration
Why it matters: In today's digital age, technology with its notifications, distractions, and increasingly shorter content to consume (think: a 15-second Instagram reel), the average attention span has been decreasing over time. Facebook use of more than one hour per day has been shown to negatively impact memory, and simply the presence of one's cell phone decreases attention.
Suggestions to try:
At home: Plan to be off all screens at least one hour before bedtime. Instead, spend this time talking with family or friends. Or enjoy a good book that you hold in your hands - no electronic reading devices.
At school: Even if your school allows cell phones, keep your phone completely off (not just on silent) during school hours.
At work: Commit to checking your email only at specific times during the day. When you're not actively checking email, don't just minimize the browser window - completely log out and close the browser window. Set up an automatic reply, letting people know when they can expect to hear back from you, e.g., by close of business or within 24 hours.
Mimosa:
“My 8-year-old son’s temper tantrums no longer make the neighbor’s dog start barking,” so said my coaching client.
