What size is it, really?
“What size did you get?”
My husband and I had stopped at the hot chocolate counter to get a pick-me-up for the last leg of our long day trip. (I had to ask. You see, I’m that person who always orders last at the restaurant, because I need to know what everyone else in the group is getting.)
"The large." . . . except it wasn't the largest size. It was the middle.
The signs advertised three sizes of cups: the medium, the large, and the extra-large. And the so-called medium was actually the smallest size available. This struck me as very odd. Why not just call the middle size “the medium”? Weird.
At any rate, when I talk about the mid-frequencies, there actually are frequencies higher and lower than this range to which I’m referring. Let’s look at some of the ways proper Mid-Frequency Training helps our brains.
Improvements gained through Mid-Frequency Training
Key areas influenced by these frequencies (1,500 - 5,000 Hz) involve cognition, interaction, and communication. Specifically, the following improvements are often noticed:
Cognition
a stronger memory
better concentration
easier learning
clearer thinking
noticeable academic improvements
greater awareness of your surroundings
active listening (not just passive hearing)
Interaction
more articulate verbal and nonverbal communication
better recognition/interpretation of facial expressions
more expression of feelings/emotions
heightened sensitivity to social cues
greater desire to be more social with others
increased feelings of affection for others
paying more attention to other people
Communication
more comprehensible articulation of thoughts
use of longer, more complex sentences
distinct pronunciation of words/sentences
more meaningful conversations
less focus on self
verbally expressing greater concern for others
improved care about one’s appearance
